The desire to try to get a women to like them causes men to engage in all sorts of counterproductive behaviors, such as talking too much, smiling, being submissive, and buying them things. In the German speed dating study, it was found that agreeableness, or being likable, had no effect on women's choices.
Yet research shows that women are often attracted to men that they don't like. Women find dominant men more sexually attractive, but not necessarily likable. Monica Lewinski regarded Bill Clinton as "The Big Creep", but she continued to date him and years later still regards him as the love of her life.
